Karbon Kitaplar
Gulliver s Travels a large portion of which Swift wrote at Woodbrook House in County Laois was published in 1726 It is regarded as his masterpiece Gulliver s Travels is an anatomy of human nature a sardonic looking glass often criticised for its apparent misanthropy It asks its readers to refute it to deny that it has adequately characterised human nature and society Each of the four books recounting four voyages to mostly fictional exotic lands has a different theme but all are attempts to deflate human pride

Lemuel Gulliver always dreamed of sailling across the seas but he never could have imagined the places his travels would take him On the Island of Liliput he is captured by tiny creatures no more than six inches tall In the country of Blefuscu he is nearly squashed by an army of giants His adventures could be the greatest tales ever told if he survives to tell them

I had been for some hours extremely pressed by the necessities of nature which was no wonder it being almost two days since I had last disburdened myself I was under great difficulties between urgency and shame The best expedient I could think of was to creep into my house which I accordingly did and shutting the gate after me I went as far as the length of my chain would suffer and discharged my body of that uneasy load But this was the only time I was ever guilty of so uncleanly an action for which I cannot but hope the candid reader will give some allowance after he has maturely and impartially considered my case and the distress I was in From this time my constant practice was as soon as I rose to perform that business in open air at the full extent of my chain and due care was taken every morning before company came that the offensive matter should be carried off in wheel barrows by two servants appointed for that purpose I would not have dwelt so long upon a circumstance that perhaps at first sight may appear not very momentous if I had not thought it necessary to justify my character in point of cleanliness to the world which I am told some of my maligners have been pleased upon this and other occasions to call in question

Part of Penguin s beautiful hardback Clothbound Classics series designed by the award winning Coralie Bickford Smith these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high quality colourful tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design Shipwrecked and cast adrift Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput an island inhabited by little people whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous His subsequent encounters with the crude giants of Brobdingnag the philosophical Houyhnhnms and brutish Yahoos give Gulliver new bitter insights into human behaviour Swift s savage satire views mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished magnified and finally bestial species presenting us with an uncompromising reflection of ourselves

This made me reflect how vain an attempt it is for a man to endeavour to do himself honour among those who are out of all degree of equality or comparison with him from Gulliver s Travels Gulliver s Travels Jonathan Swift s best known full length work a classic of English literature a satirical experiment of human nature and the dangers of misusing reason is both critical and humorous while implicitly posing he idea of whether it is good or not to use moral righteousness and physical power as governing factors within the society The power of Gulliver s Travels constantly attacking British and European societies through depictions of imaginary countries comes most probably from its fabulous depiction of the human condition which was not only the reason for its becoming popular as soon as published but also its never being out of print ever since and taking its place in the history of world literature
