Bu kilimlerde gördüğüm renklerin ve desenlerin birleşimi Herkes bu kadınların sadece başka şeyleri kopyalayabildiklerini ve aynı şeyin tekrar tekrar kopyalandığını söylüyordu Ama her kilimde pek çok çeşitleme vardı ve bu kilimler benim ilginçlik ve güzellik anlayışıma tamı tamına denk düşüyordu Elbette bu kilimleri benim için dokumadıklarını biliyordum ama bunlar her şeyiyle benim ilgi alanıma giriyordu Josephine Powell 1919da doğan Josephine Powell Türkiyeye ilk olarak 1955te Bizans mozaiklerini fotoğraflamak için geldi İlk büyük Türkiye gezisine de o sırada çıktı Cumhuriyetin kuruluşundan sonra ülkenin tamamını dolaşmasına izin verilen ilk yabancı oldu Türk düz dokumalarıyla ilgilenmeye başladı El sanatları hakkında bilgileri doğrudan doğruya Türk göçebelerinden almak için çalışmaya başladı Bu objelerin hangi amaçlara hizmet ettiğini hangi malzemelerden yapıldıklarını ve nasıl geliştirildiklerini anlamaya çalıştı Anadolu kilimlerini çuvallarını ve benzeri el ürünlerini toplamaya başladı Anadolunun kırsal bölgelerinde dokumacılığın rolünü ve önemini yansıtan bir koleksiyon oluşturdu Ayrıca Türkiyede doğal boyama sanatının yeniden canlandırılmasına ve Türkiyenin ilk kadın kooperatifi olan ve halıların otantik desenler ve doğal boyalar kullanarak dokunmasını amaçlayan DOBAG Projesinin Doğal Boya Araştırma ve Geliştirme Projesi kurulmasına öncülük etti Powell 2007 yılında öldüğünde ardında çok değerli koleksiyonlar ve fotoğraf arşivleri bıraktı Anadoludan topladığı düz dokuma ve etnografik obje koleksiyonlarını ve tüm fotoğraflarının kopyalarını 2006 yılında Vehbi Koç Vakfına bağışladı 11 Haziran 21 Ekim 2012 tarihleri arasında Koç Üniversitesi Anadolu Araştırmaları Merkezinde açılan Josephinein Görduğu sergisi kapsamında yayımlanan bu kitapta Josephinein gördüğü Anadolunun fotoğraflarını ve onu tanıyan onunla çalışan yolculuk edenlerin anlattığı Josephinei bulacaksınız Kitabı derleyen Kimberly Hart Buffalo State Collegeda öğretim üyesidir ve sosyal ve kültürel antropoloji alanında çalışmaktadır
